Storm Austen – Update from Government
Jersey Met is forecasting very strong winds Thursday evening, continuing through Friday, with heavy rain at times, due to Storm Austen.
Winds will increase from Thursday evening and overnight, initially strong force to gale force 8 from the South to Southeast, with gusts reaching 50 to 60mph.
By dawn the wind will have moved around to the West North West. It will continue to increase, reaching Gale F8 to Severe Gale F9 with gusts of 70-80mph.
It will remain very windy throughout the day with only a gradual decrease in wind strength during the afternoon on Friday.
It is likely that there will be disruption to travel as well as potential damage to trees, infrastructure, and a risk of localised flooding.
Jersey Met is briefing Government departments, emergency planning, emergency services and authorities.
We want to reassure Islanders that the weather situation is being closely monitored.
Further updates and advice will follow.
